Dispatcher Requirements
The FAA rigidly defines who can become an aircraft dispatcher under 14 CFR Part 65.53. Unlike pilots, there are no medical certificate requirements.
Basic Eligibility
- Be at least 23 years of age.
- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.
- Pass the required knowledge test (ADX).
- Pass the required practical test.
*Note: You can take the ADX written and practical test at age 21, but the FAA will hold your actual certificate in a file until your 23rd birthday. You cannot work as a Part 121 dispatcher until 23.
Training Hours (Part 65.61)
To take the practical test, you must either show relevant aviation experience (e.g., military ATC, pilot) OR graduate from an FAA-approved Aircraft Dispatcher Certification course.
200 Hours
Minimum classroom instruction required for approved courses.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming online-only courses are sufficient (the FAA requires significant in-person/synchronous instruction).
- Taking the practical test without mastering manual flight planning (using paper charts and performance graphs).
