Class 1 Medical

Before you spend a single dollar on flight training, obtain a First-Class Medical Certificate from an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). Do not skip this step.

Key Standards

Vision

Distant vision must be 20/20 or better in each eye separately, with or without correction (glasses/contacts are fine). Near vision must be 20/40. Normal color vision is required.

Cardiovascular

No established medical history of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, or coronary heart disease requiring treatment. An ECG is required at age 35, and annually after age 40.

Mental Health

No history of psychosis, severe bipolar disorder, or substance dependence. ADD/ADHD diagnoses require extensive cognitive testing and proof of being off medication.
