Military Transition (JST)
If you turned wrenches in the military, you do not need to spend two years and $30k at a Part 147 school. The FAA recognizes your military experience.
The Process (FAR 65.77)
- Obtain your JST: Download your Joint Services Transcript or DD-214 showing your specific AFSC/MOS.
- Review FAA Order 8900.1: Check if your specific military occupational specialty is approved for Airframe, Powerplant, or both.
- Interview with an FAA Inspector: Bring your documentation to the local FSDO. If approved, they will sign two copies of FAA Form 8610-2.
- Take the Exams: With signed 8610-2s, you are authorized to take the written, oral, and practical exams.
Warning: The Written Exams
The FAA written exams cover general aviation, fabric covering, wood structures, and reciprocating engines—topics rarely seen in modern military aviation. You must study civilian FAA test prep materials (e.g., ASA Prepware) intensely before testing.
