Part 147 Schools
Part 147 Aviation Maintenance Technician Schools (AMTS) are FAA-certificated training centers. The quality and cost of these programs vary wildly.
Community Colleges
$5k - $15k
- State-subsidized tuition.
- Often results in an Associate's Degree.
- Slower pace (usually 24 months).
- Highly recommended for out-of-pocket payers.
For-Profit Institutions
$45k - $60k+
- Aggressive marketing and recruiting.
- Faster pace (sometimes 14-18 months).
- High student debt burden.
- Be extremely cautious of tool financing packages.
The Bottom Line
Airlines do not care where you went to school. They only care if you hold the A&P certificate. Do not pay $50,000 for the same license you can get for $8,000 at a community college.
